Purists of Linux tend to prefer building their own “Vanilla Arch” Linux installation. But it can be very time-consuming and technically challenging to troubleshoot when things go wrong. It’s also not idea to have to perform a fresh install and re-configure all of your applications to your preference, as well as constantly backup and restore data. Thankfully there are some extremely well polished Linux distributions that are built on top of Arch Linux that have ready-to-go Desktop environments and are absolutely packed with awesome features and a wide breadth of options for a variety of tools and applications.

OpenELEC and derivatives are “Just enough OS” (JeOS) that are primarily used for audio/video playback and organization. The lines between OS and “software appliance” are blurred, here. Check out the alternative.to list for OpenELEC more details, but generally these “OSes” are not particularly useful for development, but may potentially be of use in very low-spec devices as a web browser or dashboard that can run on older AndroidTV and Raspberry-Pi type devices.

There are other Linux and BSD-like softwares available as OpenSource that will get updated occasionally in this list. If you see something missing, feel free to reach out and let me know.
